Karimpumkala – Kerala Cuisine at its Best
“Karimpumkala” must be a very familiar name for every foodie from Kottayam!
Located at Pallom, about 7 Km from Kottayam town towards Changanacherry on M.C. Road, Karimpumkala Family Restaurant is a food-joint of great repute. Their specialty is Sea Food.
Started in the year 1958 as a small and humble Toddy shop that served the local folks, Karimpumkala underwent a series of positive reformations and renovations to reach its present grandeur. Toddy is no longer served here now, and it is a prime “family restaurant” in Kottayam at present.
“Karimeen Pollichathu” is perhaps the most popular dish here, while Chemmeen (small Prawns), Kakka (Clam) , Konju (big Prawns), Njandu (Crab), Kappa (Tapioca or Cassava) with Fish Masala like items are also in good demand.
With close to 60 years of tasteful tradition and history, Karimpumkala Family Restaurant has seen three generations of ownership and authentic Kerala cooking, all from the same family. It was Mr Bhaskaran Adivakkal who founded this establishment. Later, his son Mr Sasi assumed the mantle. At present, Sasi’s son Mr Prami is at the helm of the prestigious restaurant.
There has been great progress in the physical aspect and amenities as well. The “Adivakkal Building” that houses the food-joint is a 3-storey building now. Top floor has a fully-air-conditioned dining hall, while the middle and ground floors have kitchen and more air-conditioned & non-A/C dining spaces.
The kitchen is very spacious and modern, with more than 14 burners that can handle very busy hours of business. If the restaurant has retained its prime status and repute over the last 60 years, one of the primary reasons is the fact that the main chef has always been from the owner’s family! Their house is also in the same building, which makes the management of the restaurant far more effective and efficient.
The Kitchen opens at 5 AM every day, and the first breakfast is served at 7 AM. The business is open until 10 PM. The restaurant is open on all days of the week, including Sunday.
Celebrities from the Malayalam Movie Industry, like Manoj K Jayan, Vijaya Raghavan, Seema, Johny Antony (Director), M.G. Sreekumar (Musician and singer), are admirers of Karimpumkala Family Restaurant. That the team of the Malayalam movie “Munnariyippu” visited the restaurant, and praised its culinary quality, is a matter of pride and honor for the team.
