Ouseph Chettan – Happy Roadside Vendor at Thellakom:
“Labor of Love” is what comes to one’s mind at the sight of Ouseph Chettan, the happy roadside vendor at Thellakom on M.C. Road!
He sells top-quality select fruits and food items for the last 17 years or so. At 79, Ouseph Chettan (Mr Ouseph Vattapparampil) tells us that age cannot be a hindrance to dignified living that comes off labor.
Strongly supported by his soulmate Mary Chechy (Mrs Mary Ouseph), Ouseph Chettan is a reliable vendor for many people who pass through Thellakom or who live nearby.
During his younger days, Ouseph chettan was a champion of common labor. He was a good ‘head-loader’ at the Kottayam market for many good years. Later, he learnt egg-packaging and earned a decent living from that craft. From the age of about 62, he has been selling fruits and other food items by the side of M.C. Road at Thellakom. His residence is also very close by.
Dried Tapioca (Cassava), Kerala Banana varieties (Nenthrapazham/Ethapazham, Njaalipoovan pazham, Poovan pazham etc), Pineapple fruit are the most common items that Ouseph Chettan & Mary Chechy sell here.
They have repeat & loyal Customers as every item they sell is of top quality. Sourced from their own farm, or from other farms that they are well aware of, the fruits and other food items are guaranteed for purity and quality.
Ouseph Chettan & Mary Chechy have six daughters and 2 sons. If they are working even at this stage and age of their lives, it’s certainly for the ‘labor of love’!
You can find them between 9 AM and 5 PM on M.C. Road, Thellakom (beside the famous Sports Store “Decathlon”). Except when they have health issues, they keep the shop open on all days. Sunday afternoons are not guaranteed, though.
It’s heartening to see Ouseph Chettan & Mary Chechy at their small shop, smiling and braving through life’s testing years!
