Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan – A World of Swaraj Products

The word “Khadi” is much more than ‘handwoven cloth’ for Indians. It means “Swaraj“, self-sufficiency, self-reliance, purity, integrity and much more. It has been a national movement, or an idea of national integration. We are reminded of the father of our nation Gandhiji with the word “Khadi”.

The Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan on Lal Bahadur Shastri Rd, Kottayam, is founded and managed by CHASS (Changanacherry Social Service Society) with the mission of “Sustainable development of the poor and the Marginalized through Community organization and khadi & V.I Training“.

The larger Vision statement of the Khadi project by CHASS is “A just Society based on human values“. The Khadi & V.I Sector of CHASS was set up in the year 1977, with the vision of Gandhian Philosophy about the uplift of rural economy and empowerment of rural masses.

The Khadi shop at Kottayam has a vast collection of handicrafts & gifts, Khadi clothing & other textile material, furniture & furnishings, food products, beauty products, and kolhapuri & other footwear. Everything in this shop has that “Swaraj” touch that reminds us of our rural people, their craft and labor.

Founded more than 25 years ago, the Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan at Kottayam has very large shopping space in its three floors that includes the basement. The basement displays CHASS Furniture, the first floor has Khadi clothing and other textile material, and the main ground floor has all handicrafts, gifts and food items.
