The thought behind the name “Third Place” (3rd Place):
It was Ray Oldenburg, the renowned American sociologist, who first coined the term “3rd place” with the connotation of “a place of refuge where, for a few minutes a day, we can escape the demands of family and bosses“. He mentioned about it in his 1990 book, “The Great Good Place“.
Besides a good mate and a job, it is the “3rd Place” that allows us to be temporarily amnesic to our troubles and woes.
The concept made much sense to the founders of Third Place, and the design of the food joint is aligned exactly to that – a place for people to take a break from work or busy life, and to just hang out and enjoy life’s little moments.
